Running has been my only way to unwind. I would run at least four times a week to help me cope with my stressful job, and for the past year, I have seen such a huge improvement in my health and well-being. The positive change in my physical appearance is also a nice bonus – getting checked out by the opposite sex doesn’t hurt.
But my right knee does. I guess it’s just something that comes with the sport. Every runner’s forum I’ve seen has several threads about pain in general. It could be your knees, ankles, or hips. Some types of pain are due to bad form while some just come after a good, long run.
I had my fair share of pain, especially when I started to take running seriously. I would ice my legs, especially my knees, after running for more than an hour, and this would usually take care of it. However, just two months ago, I injured my knee badly. I had to take a break from running for a little over a month to give space for my right knee to recover. It did heal eventually, but I was wary of running again because I was so scared to re-injure it.
I talked to my doctor and he reassured me that I was most likely going to get back into running safely, but I had to do it with the proper support gear. He advised me to have no doubts about running again for it would help my knee become stronger as it heals, and to get a knee support sleeve.
According to him, a good knee sleeve would help relieve the occasional pain that I would get from working the affected knee (this is normal, he said), and would provide adequate support as I become active again.
Following his advice, I purchased the Mava Sports Knee Support Sleeves. I only needed one, but I thought it was nice that these are sold in pairs so I got them and started wearing both. Why not? Having support on both knees is good insurance.
Features of the Mava Sports Knee Support Sleeves
Here is what makes the Mava Sports Knee Sleeves superior to others, according to them:
- Comfortable knee support without any stiffness
- No itching or slipping with its no-slip material
- Full mobility and comfort
- Ergonomic shape to prevent injuries and accelerate recovery
- Provides relief from post-surgery pain, osteoporosis, swelling, and sprains and strains
- Easy to wear everyday because the material is soft and light
- Unisex design
- Works well for cardio, cross-training, weight lifting, and all other types of exercise
The fact that this is supposed to be used by athletes sounded perfect to me, but I didn’t want to expect too much. I started wearing the knee support sleeves everyday since getting rid of my bandages.
I must say it’s good quality. It’s comfortable, and it fits just right without being too tight that it’s restricting movement. I think getting the right fit also helps with avoiding the knee sleeve to curl up or slide down when you are walking.
This doesn’t do that and it stays put, which is something I can appreciate because I would wear one underneath my pants to work. I love that it feels warm, too. It relaxes me and I feel like this helps with the pain relief aspect of it.
After a week and a half of just wearing it to work, I decided I wanted to run again. I put on my workout clothes and bothsleeves and I took off. It performed the same – no curling or slipping, it stayed in its place and stayed comfortable throughout my run, and most of all, I didn’t feel like my injured knee would come off in between strides.
On this first day back in the tracks, I decided to cut it off after about 30 minutes because I didn’t want to stress my knee out, but I ran again and again, and for about a week now I can run for an hour without feeling any pain or feeling like my knee needs to be checked out, so I can say that the sleeves really work.
I also like that it doesn’t cause me to sweat even though it fits snugly, so I don’t worry about stinky sleeves after a few uses.
- Fits perfectly
- Not too tight
- Doesn’t cause sweating or stinking
- Feels warm
- Gives adequate support for recovery
- Stays put
I highly recommend the Mava Sports Knee Support Sleeves. It does what it says and it does it well. If I were to try another brand, I would say that my standards have been set high.
